A formal stone water tank makes up the centre of the middle terrace, which combined with the surrounding planting gives the effect of a damp meadow. Formal beech topiary (Fagus sylvatica) pieces stand above dense herbaceous planting that includes giant fleeceflower (Persicaria polymorpha), Iris reticulata and Rodgersia pinnata. Grasses, such as Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’, Molinia ‘Transparent’ and Molinia ‘Karl Foerster’ provide interest later in the summer, as do the Miscanthus spp. cultivars. Beyond the garden to the east is the arboretum, a wide and open wildflower vista provides great views across the arboretum area to a group of Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in the distance.
