Main drive

A combination of mature cork oak (Quercus suber), deciduous and coniferous trees line the main drive, which gently slopes down towards the spring walk and gardens. The shrub layer features specimens such as butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus), Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus) and bottlebrush buckeye (Aesculus parviflora), punctuated by a selection of Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) cultivars. At the lower end of the drive, the striking stems of ghost bramble (Rubus cockburnianus) and Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ show up superbly in the winter sunlight.
